The District’s Challenge: North East Independent School District serves over 64,000 students in San Antonio and has seen the need for additional mental health services.  They also received requests from teachers and administrators wanting additional training to support their students and themselves as they address crises.

How CIS-SA Helped: Not only are CIS Site Coordinators available on select North East campuses, but also our B.A.S.E. Wellness Coach, Kim Sayers, is on LEE High School’s campus.  Kim is referred to as “the counselor for the teachers,” because she is there to provide support for the school staff as well as give them helpful information regarding student mental health.

Today:  After North East began partnering with Communities In Schools to place CIS Site Coordinators on school campuses, they began to see a decrease in behavioral referrals and an increase in attendance and graduation rates to partnering campuses.  CIS plans to expand the B.A.S.E. Wellness model to more districts so schools’ staff is equipped with the information and training to address student mental health crises.
