As an AmeriCorps Member with Communities In Schools of San Antonio (CIS-SA), you will gain hands-on experience with at-risk students in the school environment. Through the AmeriCorps program, we prepare the next generation of social services professionals for success through supervision with a highly qualified Supervisor, a robust menu of training offerings, and intentional professional development. CIS-SA’s AmeriCorps program is a proud partner of the Youth Mental Health Corps initiative supported by the Schultz Family Foundation and Pinterest. CIS-SA AmeriCorps members between the ages of 18 and 24 gain access to additional wrap-around support services, youth mental health training, career exploration, and peer networking opportunities to launch their careers in the social service field.
As an AmeriCorps Member with CIS-SA, you will:
- Complete an orientation and participate in ongoing trainings.
- Serve the minimum number of hours required for your selected service term.
- Be placed at one high-need public school under an experienced Supervisor who meets your university requirements.
- Provide intentional, supportive guidance services to 5-10 economically disadvantaged students who are at risk of dropping out of school.
- Facilitate at least one group to address common barriers among students.
- Coordinate services within the CIS-SA Six Components, including Supportive Guidance and Counseling, Health and Human Services, Parent and Family Engagement, College and Career Readiness, Enrichment, and Academic Support.

What Qualifications are needed for this position?
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work, counseling, family studies, or a related human services field.
- Possess a desire and ability to work with underserved youth.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Relationship-building skills.
To be Eligible, Applicants Must:
- Be 17 years or older.
- Hold one of the following citizenship statuses: U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien.
- Pass a national service criminal history check (FBI fingerprinting, state of service check, and national sex offender registry check).
- Received a high school diploma or its equivalent.
- Must commit to completing the required hours for their term in-person, during school hours.
