Become a Mentor

We can do no great things only small things with great love.
— Mother Teresa

A mentor is an adult who provides young people with support, counsel, friendship, and encouragement. Mentors are good listeners, people who care, people who want to help young people bring out strengths that are already there.

Become a Tutor

The soul is healed by being with children.
— Feodor Dowtoevski

There has never been a greater need or a more unique opportunity for volunteering in support of literacy. Tutors are a vital part of the literacy movement, which is building stronger communities across the country by meeting the various needs of those with specific literacy challenges. Tutoring lets you put your unique skills and interests to work and helps you share the excitement that reading, writing and successful communication bring to a person's life.

Be a Career Speaker

If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.
— Booker T. Washington

Our mission at CIS is "helping kids prepare for life." One great way to volunteer is to be a career speaker. Students love to learn about different careers and job opportunities. This encourages youth to get their diploma and go to college. It also helps students understand the importance of being responsible, earning a salary, and choosing a career that fits their interests.

Host a Job Shadow

We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give.
— Winston Churchill

One of the best ways for students to learn about different careers is to participate in a job shadow. Job shadows give students a hands-on learning experience by allowing them to see your work environment. Job shadows can include a tour of the company or agency, hands-on projects for the students to do, and an opportunity to meet the staff.
